Patience is Key When Fishing Around Structure.

A Largemouth Bass caught on an NCB Hybrid-Skirt Swim Jig

Before flipping a jig or other lure directly into the heart of a lay down, it is often a good idea to work a moving bait around the perimeter. Often, bass will suspend on the outside edge. Many anglers overlook this and immediately go for the middle of the lay down or piece of structure. Unless you have already established a strong pattern and know exactly where the fish are, it is best to methodically work your way into a lay down, brush pile or other large piece of structure with a moving bait.
