Selecting Lure Color Based on Water Clarity

A Largemouth Bass Caught on a Black & Blue NCB Lure

Ever wonder why bass caught in muddy water (pictured) tend to take on a much lighter complexion? This is done in order to better camouflage themselves into muddy water. A pale bass contrasts much less than a dark green bass. While the change is not nearly as a drastic as a say a chameleon, the change is apparent and noticeable.  When choosing your tackle, this is an important point to keep in mind. Sticking with darker lures will help increase the visibility of your presentation, thus increasing your odds! Brighter fluorescent lures can also be effective.
